FHI 360 has an exciting internship opportunity for a student interested in growing their skills within the international development sector.  The media relations intern will work collaboratively within a dynamic, fast-paced, deadline-oriented, multi-media communications department to support the media relations strategy that advances FHI 360’s business priorities. Key functions include researching relevant news reporters and editors and identifying “newsworthy” angles around FHI 360 projects and programs. Supporting the external communications team by contributing to written materials, monitoring media outlets and reporting on outcomes.

This is a paid internship with a flexible schedule based on project needs.

Anticipated Duration: 2023 Fall Semester (Sep – Dec)

Hours: Part time, up to 20 hours per week

Pay Rate: $18.00/hour

Skills Gained and Learning Opportunities:

  • Practical experience with a large, global non-profit organization’s corporate communications department
  • Shadowing, mentoring, and training opportunities with successful communications professionals
  • Experience working with an inter-disciplinary team addressing global development challenges
  • Practical experience with media relations, familiarity with Muck Rack (media relations software)

Anticipated Project(s) and Assignment Details:

The intern may contribute to various team or project activities under the direction of their supervisor in the following ways:

  • Contribute to media outlet/reporter research as assigned by supervisor
  • Contribute to written materials including pitches, news releases, blogs, website pages, and social media posts
  • Organize and participate in team meetings and country calls (e.g., assisting with meeting preparation, meeting minutes, a post-meeting report)
  • Contribute to communications-related presentations and reports on media relations analytics
  • Assist with communications-related administrative tasks, as needed

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program at a college or university in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, or a related field of study or within one year of graduation date
  • Demonstrated interest in nonprofit communications and international development through studies, work experience, and/or personal travel
  • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and bring forth ideas
  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English

  • Remote office environment

  • Personal Computer
  • Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), e-mail
  • Telephone, printer, calculator, copier, PDAs and other hand-held devices.
