We are looking for an energetic, creative and strategic individual to join us as Deputy Team Leader Programmes, playing a critical role in ensuring our responses are of a high quality and that we’re building an evidence base and learning from our actions and research.

Our Humanitarian department integrates emergency and development work, through our country programmes. It increases our capacity to meet the assistance and protection needs of children and their families affected by crises. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.

As Deputy Team Leader Programmes, you will be deployed to the field as the programmes lead in a medium or large-scale emergency, supporting the overall response Team Leader. You will ensure child focused humanitarian programmes are developed to the appropriate scale, scope and quality expected of Save the Children.. You may also take on the role of response Team Leader in small or medium scale emergencies, responsible for all aspects of the emergency response. You will be expected to mentor and capacity build both international and national staff colleagues. You will play a role in global level technical groups, working closely with headquarters technical advisers on organisational strategy, capacity building, policy and advocacy initiatives. In addition you will:

• Play a leadership role in the overall management of Save the Children emergency responses, demonstrating the behaviours that are so consistent with Save the Children’s mission, vision and values
• Take overall leadership on assessments, ensuring assessment findings are documented and that all assessments include a specific analysis of children’s needs
• Line manage staff consistent with HR policies in the country office
• Coach and mentor Technical Advisers and national level counterparts linking to wider organisational talent development mechanisms
• Take overall leadership on beneficiary accountability, ensuring consistent two-way communication, a robust complaints and response mechanism linked to child safeguarding.

To be successful in this exciting opportunity to shape the way Save the Children respond to emergencies, you will have a wealth of experience in responding to emergencies in different contexts and experience of providing strategic programmatic advice and direction in humanitarian contexts. You will have a proven track record of enabling change through influencing, inspiring and mobilising others. With experience of working within a senior management role in a complex country programme, in an emergency response or fragile state, you will also have experience managing programme teams in large-scale first phase emergency response. Furthermore, you will have:

• Experience of humanitarian contexts including in a range of different emergencies
• MSc/MA/MEng level education in a relevant subject or equivalent field experience
• Effective communication skills, written and verbal, and the ability to present arguments clearly and effectively to a wide range of internal and external audiences
• A proven track record of programme design in a humanitarian context
• The willingness and ability to travel extensively for periods of up to 6 months of the year, often at short notice to remote and insecure locations.

All members of our HST team are available and ready to be deployed anywhere in the world at short notice. You will normally work unusual hours, undertake a lot of travel (up to 80% of the time) and will often work in stressful and insecure environments. In return, you will receive 35 days Annual Leave per year, medical insurance while on deployment, travel and accommodation provided for, paid R&R, gross salary paid from UK plus hardship allowance, complexity allowance and expensive posting allowance where applicable.
