The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UN Environment’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities (http://www.unenvironment.org).

This position is located in UN Environment, Economy Division, Division Office at the Nairobi duty station.

 

Responsabilités :

The incumbent will be expected to provide operational and management support to the Director of the Division by :

  • Overseeing substantive preparations for the Director’s meetings and mission ;
  • Coordinating briefing notes and background papers ;
  • Overseeing the work of the Director’ Personal Assistant and the preparation of electronic and paper files ;
  • Bringing priority issues, as relevant, to the attention of the Director by: identifying priority items in the Director’s e-mail, flagging them for her attention and suggest adequate course of action ;
  • Ensure follow-up to the Director’s requests s-Organize events, meetings and retreats ;
  • Support the consistent sharing of information with outposted offices ;
  • Draft correspondence on behalf of the Director ;
  • Respond to particular queries emanating from Economy Division staff, provide them with guidance and assistance in responding to the Director’s specific requests ;
  • Act as liaison between posted Economy Division offices and UNEP’s Divisions ;
  • Draft Director’s formal and e-mail correspondence as may be requested ;
  • Finalize and editing speeches and presentations for the Director ;
  • Assist in the preparation of working documents for various international and intergovernmental meetings.

Formation :

Advanced university degree in areas/sectors/disciplines in environmental sciences, management, political science or law or a first university degree with a relevant combination of professional and academic qualifications.

 

Expérience professionnelle :

At least 5 years of progressively responsible work experience in relevant programme areas such as climate change, resource efficiency and chemicals and health are required, including three years of experience at the international level. Knowledge of the UN system is an advantage.

 

Connaissances linguistiques :

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable.

Notice spéciale :

  • This position is temporarily available for 364 days. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment ;
  • While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post ;
  • Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station ;
  • This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15 ;
  • Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply. Submitting an application or selection for the current temporary job opening does not delay or increase the mandatory age of separation ;
  • Retirees above the mandatory age of separation who wish to be considered for the current temporary job opening must indicate the reason for their last separation as “retirement.” Such retirees shall not be employed by the Organization, unless (a) the operational requirements of the Organization cannot be met by staff members who are qualified and available to perform the required functions; and (b) the proposed employment would not adversely affect the career development or redeployment opportunities of other staff members and represents both a cost-effective and operationally sound solution to meet the needs of the service.

 

United Nations Considerations :

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
