Position Title : Senior Project Assistant

Duty Station : Faya, CHAD

Classification : UG equivalent G6/1

Type of Appointment : Special Short Term, 6 months with possibility of extension

Estimated Start Date : As soon as possible

IOM :

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

 

Context :

The project “Balke – Security and Stabilization Project, Northern Chad”, located in the Emergency and Transition Unit of IOM Chad, aims at the stabilization of communities in the north of Chad that are affected by marginalization, a lack of basic social services, and challenges related to irregular migration towards gold mining areas in Tibesti and southern Libya, including trafficking and recruitment into armed groups and the promotion of human security in these communities.

 

The project will work along two main axes :

  1. Supporting communities in addressing root causes of instability by providing alternative means of livelihood and participation in decision-making processes and ;
  2. Enhancing institutional capacities to secure and manage Chadian borders by developing stronger community engagement and more coherent approaches to border management.

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Project Manager and under the overall supervision of the Head of Unit, the Senior Project Assistant will support the implementation of the project by assuming the following functions/ responsibilities :

 

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Support the Project Manager in the day to day management of all project components ;
  2. Plan and supervise the work of the project’s community mobilizers on a daily basis, highlighting challenges to the Project Manager immediately and proactively suggesting solutions ;
  3. Stay up to date on all field activities and be prepared to provide updates to the Project Manager at any given time ;
  4. Conduct missions to the target communities to implement project activities jointly with the community mobilizers ;
  5. Provide administrative support to the project, including the preparation, processing and filing of travel, logistical and financial documents in close cooperation with the Admin Assistant based in Faya and the Project support assistant based in Ndjamena ;
  6. Maintain and foster positive working relationships with the local authorities, beneficiaries and other stakeholders ;
  7. In coordination with the Project Manager and the Head of Sub-Office ensure relevant authorities are regularly updated about project activities and remain supportive ;
  8. Ensure full transparency of IOM rules and procedures in discussion with beneficiaries ;
  9. Trouble shoot arising challenges in the relationship between authorities, beneficiaries and other stakeholders in coordination with the Project Manager ;
  10. Support incoming consultants with all organizational support as needed ;
  11. Contribute to an atmosphere of cyclical programmatic adjustment with regards to intended and unintended effects of the project through a do no harm approach throughout the project implementation process ;
  12. Seek synergies with the other projects of IOM implemented in the BET region ;
  13. Any other such duties as may be assigned.

 

Required Qualifications and Experience :

Education : Completed Secondary Education. Additional studies in Social Studies, Political Science, Education, Sociology distinct advantage.

  1. Minimum 4 years of relevant experience ;
  2. Previous experience with UN and International Agencies, or NGOs an advantage ;
  3. Strong knowledge of computer applications, especially Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

Languages :

  • For this position, fluency in English, French and local Arab is required ;
  • Knowledge of Gorane and other languages spoken in Bourkou, Ennedi and Tibesti provinces of Chad is a distinct advantage.
