Job Description

Since the December 2013 crisis, the Republic of South Sudan continued to face a spiral of humanitarian, development, economic and security crises of unprecedented proportions. Several drivers of conflict have emerged around, ethnic rivalries and exclusionary politics, and unaddressed local grievances that have fed localized militias in the country, widespread proliferation of weapons, threatening community safety and limiting socioeconomic development.

Working in existing and new conflict clusters, Peace and Community Cohesion Phase II Project  (PaCC II) will support the central and subnational governments and authorities to; a) establish and enhance the capacity of peace infrastructures to manage conflicts peacefully; b) deepen social, cultural and economic cohesion among communities to foster healing, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence; c) empower citizens, with added emphasis on women, youth and other marginalised groups for voice, agency and participation in governance and peacebuilding initiatives and demand accountability; d) implement legal, policy and civilian frameworks on small arms and light weapons; and e) promote conflict sensitive access, use and control of natural resources by pastoral and farming communities in targeted conflict clusters.  The Phase II of the project is implemented in seven conflict clusters; The project is implemented in seven conflict clusters: Bor, Torit, Rumbek, Aweil, Bentiu, Kuajok and Malakal clusters. The project is also implemented at national level and works in collaboration with government counterparts and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), other UN Agencies, amongst other relevant partners.

In this regard, PaCC is seeking to recruit a Driver to be based in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State, with occasional field missions.

Provision of reliable and secure driving services

  • Drive office vehicle for the transportation of authorized UN staff;
  • Deliver and collect mails, documents and other items to/from Government offices, UN Offices and other institutions;
  • Meet and pick/drop official personal and visitors at the airport including, visa and customs arrangements when required;
  • Verify that passengers wear seatbelts and facemasks at times when in the vehicle;
  • Ensure all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents;
  • Ensure vehicle comply with Minimum Operating Security Standards (MOSS) and obey all traffic laws.

Cost-saving through proper use of the vehicle

  • Ensure cost-saving by driving responsibly;
  • Maintain daily vehicle logs, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil change, servicing, greasing and repairs;
  • Provide inputs to preparation of vehicle maintenance plans and reports.

Provide day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle

  • Ensure that the official vehicle is kept clean and is always in good working conditions;
  • Make minor repairs and arrangements for major repairs;
  • Change oil, check tires, check brakes and timely washing of the car.

Maintain and ensure availability of all required documents/supplies

  • Maintain and ensure availability of all required documents/supplies including, vehicle insurance, vehicle logbooks, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit and necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle;
  • Ensure all immediate actions required by rule and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents.

Provide updated road related information 

  • Research and plan for traffic, construction, and weather delays and determine the best route;
  • Use the radio communication in the car.

Min. Education requirements
  • Secondary Education supplemented with a certificate from a Technical/Vocational School.
Min. years of relevant work experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ work experiences as driver in a recognized institution with safe driving records
  • Work experience in the United Nations, international NGOs or diplomatic missions is preferred.
Required skills
  • Valid Driving License

  • Skills in minor vehicle repair and mechanics
  • Basic computer literacy is added advantage
Required Language(s)
  • Fluency in English and basic Arabic is mandatory; and knowledge of local languages is desirable
