The Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services Africa (MAS CAF) Department is recruiting an Investment Analyst to join the portfolio team responsible for managing IFC clients in the manufacturing, health, education, tourism, retail and property sectors across Africa. The MAS CAF portfolio team is organized in two sub-regions, with one portfolio manager responsible for North and Eastern Africa and one portfolio manager overseeing West, Central and Southern Africa.

The Investment Analyst (IA) will support both MAS CAF portfolio managers and report directly to the Portfolio Manager for West, Central and Southern Africa. He/she will be based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Role & Responsibilities :

The IA is tasked with supporting the two MAS portfolio managers for Africa with respect to a number of essential portfolio management tasks and with the supervision of several IFC clients.

The IA responsibilities include but are not limited to : 

  • Portfolio supervision work including periodic reviews of projects ;
  • Direct supervision -or under the leadership of an Investment Officer- of existing portfolio projects, business performance monitoring and compliance with IFC investment agreements ;
  • Financial statements analysis and Financial models/projections preparation ;
  • High quality credit analyses resulting in sound Investment Review Platform (IRP) ratings and timely submissions of probability of default (PD)/ loss given default (LGD) ;
  • Significant involvement in the MAS CAF Equity Portfolio including accurate quarterly equity valuations ;
  • Identification of early warning signs, and, when necessary, formulate/implement strategies for work-out, restructurings or rescheduling ;
  • Project-related documents preparation as well as notes/reports on relevant portfolio themes, for internal and external audiences ;
  • Effective utilization of Research tools to conduct in-depth benchmarking analysis by sectors, companies and geographies.

 

Selection Criteria :

  • A bachelor’s degree  ;
  • At least 2-3 years of work experience in Corporate or Project finance, including Investment Banking, Commercial Banking, Private Equity, Equity Research or Business Consulting ;
  • Excellent Excel, PowerPoint and Word skills to build succinct and convincing analyses and presentations ;
  • Strong research and quantitative skills with preference for a background in financial analysis and modeling ;
  • Strong client service orientation with openness to feedback and new ideas ;
  • Exceptional attention to detail ;
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in English. Fluency in other languages (e.g. French, Portuguese) is a plus ;
  • Team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to develop effective relationships within and outside IFC ;
  • Ability to work flexibly on a range of assignments, cope with shifting priorities at short notice, and still deliver top quality work while meeting tight deadlines ;
  • Takes personal responsibility and accountability for timely response to client queries, requests or needs, working to remove obstacles that may impede execution or overall success ;
  • Experience in Emerging Markets is preferred- Experience in sub-Saharan Africa will be a plus; and
  • Ability to work sensitively and effectively in a multicultural setting.
