Since our founding in 1983, our nonpartisan, nongovernmental Institute has performed high-impact work in more than 100 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.  The Institute currently has offices in more than 40 countries.

IRI seeks talented Junior Writer/Editor with a proven track record of success to join our External Affairs team.

The Junior Writer/Editor will be a key member of the External Affairs team and will support External Affairs senior management in telling IRI’s story to an external audience. Tasks will include drafting and editing press releases, event invitation text, marketing materials, blogs, media advisories, and assisting on editing long-form publications, articles and other assorted materials for publication, as well carrying out the day-to-day and ad-hoc review of the organization’s promotional materials. The Junior Writer/Editor will be responsible for liaising with IRI’s program staff on a range of projects and will be a point of contact between External Affairs managers and program teams.

The Junior Writer/Editor will also be responsible for some overseas training of IRI’s field staff, as well as communications coverage of high level IRI events that take place overseas.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with an immediate start.

 

Position Requirements :

  • Undergraduate/graduate degree preferred in communications, political/social science, international relations or related field
  • Excellent writing, editing and organizational skills  ;
  • Self-starter with the ability to multi-task numerous projects at once and work well with individuals and teams across the institute ;
  • Proven ability to handle a wide range of writing formats ;
  • Proven ability to handle a wide range of copyediting tasks ;
  • Proven ability to deliver projects on deadline ;
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience in communications, foreign affairs, national security and/or development issues ;
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite .

 

Primary Functions & Responsibilities :

  • Assist in researching, writing, editing and proofreading organizational communication materials ;
  • Use copyediting skills to edit the organization’s publications on a wide range of subjects ;
  • Craft and edit blogs for IRI’s platform Democracy Speaks ;
  • Assist in crafting and editing op-eds for placement in major media outlets ;
  • Craft press releases, media pitches and other materials for the media ;
  • Work closely with program staff to develop excellent promotional pieces and publications and manage multiple projects at once ;
  • Assist in drafting and editing one-pagers that describe the organization’s work. Ensure that materials are up to date and relevant ;
  • Assist with the creation/editing of other materials for external publication as requested .

Bachelors or better in Communication or in a related field.

1 an : Professional experience in communications, foreign affairs, national security and/or development issues
