Context :
The past year has seen a sharp deterioration in the security situation in Burkina Faso’s northern and eastern regions, which has accentuated the need for more pronounced efforts on community stabilization in affected areas, and which has resulted in sudden population displacements necessitating humanitarian attention. The activity of non-state armed groups and inter-community tensions have led to increased displacement from 45,000 to 135,589 since the start of 2019, and the closure of 1,200 schools and 4 health centers. More than 200 security incidents were recorded in 2018, and 119 in 2019. Authorities have declared a 6-month State of Emergency in 14 of the country’s 45 provinces, located within 7 regions of the country. The complex security situation has affected social cohesion, disrupted delivery of social services, particularly education, and risks increased intercommunal clashes. It has also become an additional challenge for the humanitarian response in the four most affected regions –Sahel, North, Central-North and East.
IOM Burkina Faso works in close coordination with the Government of Burkina Faso, the UN Country Team and the activated sectors, to respond to the urgent humanitarian needs of the displaced populations, while also working on community stabilization to address the root causes initially having caused the displacement, and to create environments conducive to return in safe areas of return.
