Main purpose of job:

To support the Head of the UK Office and provide political as well as administrative support in the UK’s newest diplomatic post in N’Djamena, Chad.  As a new role in a new post, it will be your role to support the delivery of HMG’s objectives, in consultation with the Head of Office. You will provide operational support to the Office, including setting up meetings and programmes for inward UK visits, building and maintaining contacts and other administrative duties as needed. You will also have the opportunity to develop a portfolio of political work, including representing the UK at external events, and monitoring and reporting on political and economic developments in the country.

A new and exciting opportunity to contribute actively to establishing the UK’s new platform in Chad, based in the EU Delegation. You will be one of a small team of three, working alongside the FCO Head of Office and the DFID Representative for Chad.  The UK’s Office in Chad reports to the British High Commission, Yaounde, with whom you will work closely to ensure the smooth running of the Office and UK residential property in Chad. Through your own initiative and creative thinking, you will have the opportunity to shape how the new Office engages with its partners to deliver its objectives in Chad.

Roles and responsibilities :

  • Supporting the smooth running of the Office, including setting up meetings for UK staff, leading on incoming UK visits, organising events.  Liaising with UK office staff including drivers; linking back to Yaounde and other UK posts in the region and London as needed;
  • Deliver high quality political reporting and analysis covering immediate and longer term events and subjects, working closely with the Head of Office to identify themes and issues of interest to Yaoundé and London
  • To support press and public affairs work as needed, including managing the Office’s social media platforms day to day, in close liaison with the communications team, British High Commission Yaounde;
  • Provide local support to BHC Yaounde Corporate Services team pertaining to management of UK residential property in Chad and the UK Office.

  • Solid political background – ability to analyse and provide accurate reports and ability to manage social media platforms. At least 2 years experiences in political reporting, research, analysis and communication.
  • Experience working for government, a Diplomatic Mission, Think Tank , NGO, international organization or similar institution
  • Confident and skilled networker with strong organizational skills
  • Fully IT literate
  • A problem solver – ability to multi task and work at pace using effective prioritisation.
  • Fluent written and spoken English and French

  • Professional experience / qualification in political reporting/analysis and Communication
  • Knowledge of Chad political situation as well as regional affairs.
  • Degree in International Relations, Political Science, Administration, Law, Communication, Development or related field.

As this is a new Diplomatic Post and the office will only just have opened when you start working with us, self-reliance, initiative and a ‘can-do’, positive attitude will be essential. You will need to be a self-starter, comfortable with collaborating and partnering, able to problem solve, and open to the unexpected. Your role may well change day to day – being flexible and open to changes as our office establishes itself will be key to success.
