FHI 360 staff working in the United States are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, regardless of the type of project or client they serve, or of their employment status (full/part-time, remote, telework, or in-office), unless an accommodation applies.  FHI 360 complies with federal, state, and local laws with regard to accommodations related to this policy. Full vaccination is currently defined as two weeks after the second dose in a two-dose series, such as the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine. Position summary:

Find out what international development and humanitarian work does from the inside! You would report to the Regional Director, and work closely with teams in 13 countries.

The West Africa and Middle East office is based in the US and covers Latin America and Eastern Europe. Key responsibilities:

Internal Team Communication and Coordination – WAMERO Region including HQ and Country Offices

  • Actively lead in development of annual WAMERO communication strategy.
  • Coordinate information sharing between Regional Director and Country Teams and Headquarters, including dissemination of information.
  • Provide and organize top-notch communication materials for meetings and the Director’s travel.
  • Track to-do tasks and achievements and produce monthly update report on progress.
  • Design and provide training on topics like media relations, FHI 360 identity, and how to tell our story.
  • Liaise between HQ Communications department, Regional and/or Country Office on any communications related issues.
  • Lead and track Regional Director’s internal communication e.g., monthly call schedules with Country Representatives, Senior Management at HQ, WAMERO staff, etc. Support of Regional Events for the region (internal) and facilitate sophisticated meetings and workshops.
  • Provide consultative review and editing to internal customer’s communications to ensure accuracy, clarity and tone.
  • Handle WAMERO MS Teams and channels and help us rationalize our SharePoint site.

Communication within FHI 360 – with other teams

  • Revitalize and maintain our Team intranet page – we want it to be exciting, relevant and up to date
  • Lead review of project information in the company’s internal knowledge management system, finding errors and supervising progress to fix them.
  • Develop and distribute Regional newsletter, country factsheets and presentations.
  • Researches, writes, and edits a broad range of communications that promote the activities of WAMERO.
  • Lead knowledge management and sharing effort in WAMERO through collaboration with country teams and HQ.
  • Liaise with communications staff at FHI 360, including staff working on media, events and other team members to secure presence of FHI 360 speakers and/or materials at important events.
  • Lead communications efforts, which include collaboration with team members in appropriate departments to improve the external communication efforts of the organization and provide input for various newsletters and web pages using FHI 360 strategic objectives and management approval.
  • Regularly identify story ideas, project milestones, communications that could help with building our image, needs as well as promotional opportunities.
  • Works closely with departments to look out for company developments and trends within the organization.
  • Coordinate media activities in country/projects in WAMERO, including identifying consultants and participating on site for design and development of communication materials.

External Facing Communications

  • Manage and track Regional Director’s external communication
  • Develop and implement communications and public relations strategies to promote and publicize departmental projects in coordination with HQ Corporate Communications.
  • Research, write, and edit communications that promote the activities of WAMERO
  • Lead organization of regional events, summits, meetings and conferences.
  • Applies understanding of business/organizational operations to improve material’s depth and relevance to target audience.
  • Prepares a promotional and informational materials including articles, bulletins, websites, pamphlets and other related media material (external).
  • Promote the FHI 360 brand and ensure consistency and integrity in communication materials, with emphasis
  • Provide publicity and promotional support for special events and community outreach activities.
  • Perform other assignments as requested by the Regional Director.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Initiative and discretion in judging and managing confidential matters, materials, and critical issues.
  • Creative, innovative and meticulous.
  • Top level English skills in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with all levels of staff, representatives of donors and collaborating agencies, individuals from diverse cultures and the public.
  • French, Spanish &/or Arabic proficiency a plus.
  • Self motivated – skill in organizing, processing and delivering high quality products with attention to details.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and set priorities.
  • Resourceful and creative use of technology, research skills, and relationship building among organization teams and professional organizations to resolve problems make improvements.
  • Photography and/or videography skills a plus.
  • Experience with website editing and content management is desirable
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and political and ethical issues.

Type and nature of contacts:

  • Work closely with Regional Director, Country Directors, WAMERO Sr. Management Team, and external parties.

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
  • 8+ years demonstrated ability in writing, editing and publications or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Able to communicate in a clear, engaging manner and speak, write and read fluent English.
  • Prior NGO experience a plus.

Typical Physical Demands:

  • Typical office environment.
  • Ability to spend long hours looking at computer screen and doing repetitive work on a keyboard.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 5 lbs.

Technology to be Used:

  • Laptop, Microsoft applications (i.e., Office 365, SharePoint, Skype/Zoom/Teams), cell phone/mobile technology, and standard office equipment.

Travel Requirements:

  • Less than 10%
