Purpose of the Role :

The primary purpose of this role is to provide direct support to the HSE Manager to :

  • Manage the HSE Department’s Safety Officers through daily direction and support ;
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the HSE Management System, Performance Procedures and other programmes, campaigns and procedures ;
  • Communicate and coordinate all Health and Safety programmes for Fekola SA ;
  • Develop and provide technical and administrative direction on all safety decisions, which bear critical importance to the overall organizational objectives, operations and profitability ;
  • Mentor and coach HSE staff to aid in their development as health and safety professionals ;
  • Mentor and coach management and employees to achieve a safe production culture and continually improve safety performance ;
  • Assume responsibilities, as directed by the HSE Manager, during cross rotation when the HSE Manager is off site ;
  • Develop qualitative risk assessment facilitators within the organization and oversee HSE risk assessments.

 

Location and Reporting Structure :

This position will be based at the Fekola Mine and reports directly to the HSE Manager.

 

Accountabilities of the Role :

  • Accountable to direct resources and activities of the department to support the HSE system, procedures and programs ;
  • Conduct hazard and risk assessments and develop recommendations from these assessments ;
  • Monitors and reports compliance and non-compliances to applicable standards, laws and regulations ;
  • Assist the operations in investigations of all incidents and ensure proper records are completed and submitted.  Assist in implementation of corrective actions as it relates to the incident and ensure “lessons learned” are communicated throughout the organization and are incorporated into the program, if necessary ;
  • Devise, supervise and coordinate training programs or media, which will increase proficiency in safety practices and promote OHS consciousness ;
  • Ensure all regulatory monitoring and reporting are completed on time and on budget ;
  • Stay abreast of current and emerging technical and professional aspects of this position ;
  • Accountable for the overall direction, coordination and performance of subordinate employees.
  • Accountable to carry out managerial responsibilities in accordance with Company’s Policies & Procedures and any applicable local laws/legislation. Responsibilities include training employees under your management, planning, assigning, delegating and directing work and addressing complaints and resolving issues.
  • Maintain CSafe operation and support users throughout Fekola.
  • Provide support to mine operations in fatigue management and the compilation of DSS monitoring data.

 

Competencies and Qualifications :

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required :

  • Education : A bachelor’s degree (4 years) or higher in Occupational Health and Safety management or related technical field ;
  • Experience : Appropriate 10 years’ working experience in the mining industry with 5 years minimum at a supervisory/managerial level ;
  • Relevant Work Experience : Advance knowledge of mining industry practices, regulatory requirements and industry standards.   Experience facilitating qualitative risk assessments would be desirable.  Knowledge regarding occupational hygiene management and monitoring is preferable ;
  • Communication Skills: Must have very good written and oral communications. Required to speak effectively before groups of senior management, clients, subcontractors and/or employees of the organization ;
  • Computer Skills : Excellent computer skills required. Must have experience with Microsoft Office Programs ;
  • Reasoning Ability : Use of basic reasoning, thinking “on your feet” and ability to resolve issues quickly with little or no direction from a supervisor. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule format. Good negotiating skills. Ability to make good judgements and render good decisions ;
  • Fluency in English is a prerequisite ;
  • Must be able to work independently, and must be an excellent team player ;
  • High level of stress tolerance, discipline, decisiveness, and ability to achieve deadlines ;
  • Passionate spirit to drag all employees along in safety awareness and the common endeavour for zero harm to people ;
  • Valid government issued Driver’s Licence.
