            Consultant – Social Media

 

  1. Purpose of consultancy

WHO AFRO’s Communications team requires the support of an experienced Social Media Consultant to support daily social media activities, create content for various health topics, manage relationships with critical media partners and support social media campaigns around relevant health days and events.

 

  1. Background

The Communications Unit (COM) plays a key role in providing visibility and building support for WHO’s agenda, as well as disseminating health information and managing the organization’s reputation. The Unit also supports the Regional Director in the effective delivery of his/her mandate and in the provision of leadership and coordination of the work of WHO in the African Region. COM drafts and edits multiple types of key documents and media products.

Communications prepares materials for media, which include press releases, talking points, opinion pieces, web stories and public information documents for dissemination to the media, donors and other partners. It is crucial that this material is factually correct, comprehensible to a general audience and engaging. Social media is a critical part of external communications. The AFRO social media channels have experienced enormous growth over the past two years and now both the English and French Facebook pages have over one million followers each and the English Twitter account has over 240 000 followers. The RD’s Twitter account is also a key visibility platform for her and AFRO.

 

  1. Deliverables
  • Manage all WHO-AFRO’s and the Regional Director’s social-media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tiktok; Post several social media posts a day.
  • Develop engaging health promotion content for social media platforms to communicate strategic messaging, advocate with, and influence stakeholders as well as increase outreach with targeted and new audiences; One set of content a month.
  • Collaborate with other Communications team members, including the supervisor and Editor Writer, to generate material for social media communications;
  • Disseminate and schedule social media content in English, and support the management of the French platforms working with colleagues;
  • Develop and manage the production of engaging multimedia content for social media platforms such as graphic cards, GIFS and animation; Oversee the production of such content, at least one set every four weeks.
  • Lead the development of social media campaigns working with WHO Communications, Risk Communications, technical teams or external vendors; At least two social media campaigns during the consultancy.
  • Produce social media toolkits for WHOAFRO county offices and partners for strategic WHO health days, events or campaigns; At least three during the consultancy.
  • Collaborate with teams and technical experts, including sharing relevant content for approvals.
  • Build the capacity of communications officers in Country Offices in social media outreach through trainings, creating templates and providing shareable content;
  • Support and facilitate WHOAFRO’s content production with Viral Facts/ Africa Infodemic Response Alliance on a regular basis;
  • Liaise Regularly with WHO HQ and various Regional Offices to align on messaging and share content and priorities.
  • Using the analytics provided by the various social media platforms regularly provide reports on the key indicators of social media engagement; Develop a set of analytics on a monthly basis.
  • Liaising Ads manager to manage social media advertising on Facebook & other platforms for the campaign to reach target audience in the Region;
  • Prepare weekly content for Facebook Advertising in the Region for maximum social media impact.
  • Post relevant web stories and other content, on the AFRO website;

 

  1. Qualifications, experience, skills and languages
  • Excellent English writing and editing skills.
  • A proven track record of breaking down complex technical information into social media content for a non-expert audience groups.
  • Commitment to WHO’s values and objectives.
  • Ability to work flexibly within short deadlines in a changing environment with competing priorities.
  • Share a results-oriented work ethic.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of online dissemination of information, via social media mechanisms and the web.
  • Thorough understanding of the impact of communications on the reputation, image, and success of an organization, as well as the role the web and social media has in this regard.
  • Fluency in using Outlook, Word, Excel,and PowerPoint.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Essential: Bachelor’s degree in information management or information technology, communications creative studies or any related field.

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate degree in Communications, Information Technology or Public Health
  • Photo and video production skills

Experience

  • Essential: At least two years of experience in managing high profile social media channels.

Desirable:

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Experience with Adobe Photo Shop and Adobe Premiere or other design tools

Languages and level required (Basic/Intermediate/Expert):

  • Essential: Expert English
  • Desirable: Working knowledge of French or Swahili
