The objective of the Lead Legal Counsel role is to assist the Virgin Australia business in drafting and negotiating complex contracts, assessing, and managing legal risk, including privacy and consumer law risks  and providing innovative legal and commercial solutions on a wide range of matters. The successful candidate will have strong commercial contracting experience and the ability to build collaborative relationships.  You will be a self-starter who is able to work within a dynamic and complex environment.

 

The Lead Legal Counsel is responsible for :

  • Drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts ;
  • Reviewing marketing and promotional materials ;
  • Liaising and working closely with internal teams to support their contractual obligations and commitments ;
  • Providing commercially astute and outcomes focused legal advice to internal stakeholders on a wide range of issues, including consumer law, privacy, and spam compliance ;
  • Advising on and resolving customer disputes ;
  • Effectively managing the provision of advice by external legal services ;
  • Assisting with the preparation and delivery of legal and compliance training for business stakeholders ;
  • Developing strong relationships and working closely with internal business stakeholders ;
  • Keeping informed of relevant legislative changes that impact the Virgin Australia business.

 

To be a great fit for this role, you will bring :

  • A Bachelor of Laws degree, a current Legal Practicing Certificate and at least 4 years relevant experience within a respected law firm or an inhouse team ;
  • Experience advising on compliance issues (such as privacy, SPAM and/or consumer law) ;
  • Solid knowledge of contract law principles and strong contract drafting and negotiation skills ;
  • Proven ability to manage multiple stakeholders as well as stakeholders at all levels of the organisation and the ability to provide solutions focussed advice ;
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal reasoning and analytical skills ;
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative.
