Organizational Background

Village Health Works (VHW) is a non-profit organization operating in Burundi, East Africa. VHW’s mission is to provide quality, compassionate community-based health care in a dignified environment while addressing the root causes of illness, poverty, violence and neglect. VHW’s holistic approach integrates clinical services with education, food security, music/culture, and livelihood development programs. VHW is in the process of building a hospital with a capacity of 150 beds and four operating theaters.

Purpose of the Position

The Director of Finance is responsible for the financial reporting, budgeting and accounting procedures within the organization to meet expanding and changing needs. The Director of Finance is a member of the Leadership Team and plays a critical role in strategic decision making and operations as VHW continues to enhance its programming and build capacity. This position works closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to support the fiduciary and organizational compliance responsibilities of the Board of Directors.

Primary Responsibilities

• Ensure finances are managed according to legislation, VHW policies, and procedures and generally accepted accounting principles
• Actively review all financial plans and budgets, including preparing financial information for grant reporting and communicating any significant changes to the Leadership Team
• Work with the finance team to provide Program Managers with customized financial reports, budget monitoring and other analyses on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis
• Work with the finance team to prepare, analyze and communicate quarterly reports and annual financial statements for all stakeholders
• Oversee and lead the annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Finance and Leadership Teams
• Develop and oversee a strong Procurement Team, including international, regional and local procurement
• Improve upon purchasing practices while providing support to Procurement Director and facilitating communication with Department heads
• Collaborate with the US team to effectively plan and review key projects and procurement plans

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration
• Minimum of 5 years of work experience in a financial role showing growth in responsibility
• Prior experience supervising, coaching and mentoring a team in a fast-paced environment
• Prior responsibility for the quality and content of financial data and reporting for either a division or significant program area
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders in a multi-cultural environment
• Fluency in both English and French desired
