Position Title : Project Assistant

Duty Station : N’Djamena

Classification : UG equivalent G4

Type of Appointment : Special Short Term, 6 months with possibility of extension

Estimated Start Date : As soon as possible

IOM :

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

 

Context :

The project “Balke – Security and Stabilization Project, Northern Chad”, located in the Emergency and Transition Unit of IOM Chad, aims at the stabilization of communities in the north of Chad that are affected by marginalization, a lack of basic social services, and challenges related to irregular migration towards gold mining areas in Tibesti and southern Libya, including trafficking and recruitment into armed groups and the promotion of human security in these communities.

 

The project will work along two main axes :

  1. Supporting communities in addressing root causes of instability by providing alternative means of livelihood and participation in decision-making processes and
  2. Enhancing institutional capacities to secure and manage Chadian borders by developing stronger community engagement and more coherent approaches to border management

Under the direct supervision of the Project Support Officer and the overall supervision of the Project Manager, the Project Support Assistant will support the implementation of the project by assuming the following functions/ responsibilities :

 

Core Functions / Responsibilities :

  1. Providing general administrative support to the Balke project team ;
  2. Ensure timely processing of all administrative files of the Balke project (related to travel, procurement, logistical, financial documents) in close coordination with the Senior Assistant based in Faya ;
  3. Keep track of all administrative documents and follow-up continuously with HR, Finance and Logistics units in N’Djamena ;
  4. Inform the Project Support Officer regularly about the status of administrative files and immediately highlight any challenges or delays ;
  5. Archiving of all administrative documents related to the project ;
  6. Assist the Project Support Officer with translation, research, logistics where requested ;
  7. Receive correspondence addressed to the Balke project and bring it to the attention of the Project Support Officer ;
  8. Support the organization of project related events or workshops in N’Djamena ;
  9. Any other such duties as may be assigned.

 

Required Qualifications and Experience :

Education : Higher education completed with a bachelor’s degree in Social sciences, Political Science, Education, Law, Accounting, Business Administration or related fields is required.

  1. Minimum 4 years of relevant experience ;
  2. Previous experience with UN and International Agencies, or NGOs an advantage ;
  3. Strong knowledge of computer applications, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.

Languages :

  • For this position, fluency in French and local Arab is required ;
  • Knowledge of English as well as Gorane or other languages spoken in Bourkou, Ennedi and Tibesti provinces is an advantage.

 

Required Competencies :

Prior experience with implementation of high-participatory projects in sometimes difficult environments. Sound experience in documentation of own work, experience and willingness to work with diverse teams. Ability to identify challenges and be proactive. Prior experience working with the civil registry, youth engagement, psychosocial assistance or gender-based violence strongly desired.
