EpiC Botswana Project Description :

FHI 360 is a nonprofit human development organization dedicated to improving lives in lasting ways by advancing integrated, locally driven solutions. In Botswana, we are implementing the Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project. EpiC is a five-year global project funded by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).  The project is dedicated to achieving and maintaining HIV epidemic control and it provides strategic technical assistance (TA) and direct service delivery (DSD) to break through barriers to 95-95-95 and promote self-reliant management of national HIV programs by improving HIV case-finding, prevention, and treatment programming.

EpiC and its consortium members implement COVID-19 activities in more than 60 countries across the world. The project delivers high-quality technical assistance at the community, facility, district, regional and national levels, and builds relationships with relevant partners working to address COVID-19.  Our ability to respond quickly to program, technical and procurement needs leverage our deep bench of country-based clinical, program, and community experts.

EpiC will also work to optimize vaccine roll out, support community infection prevention and control, collaborate to develop risk communication strategies to prevent and mitigate the spread of COVID-19, and strengthen the health workforce planning and management structures. EpiC will work closely with the MoHW to ensure these actions are guided by and in coordination with the national strategy and other key partners implementing COVID-19 work.

 

Job Summary :

The Technical  Officer- Social Behavior Change will provide technical coordination to the project in the areas of social and behavior change communication (SBCC), capacity strengthening to CSO partners and facility staff, community mobilization, and advocacy.  Will work collaboratively with the Ministry of Health and Wellness communications team and other project partners to provide technical support focusing on the development of SBC strategies, tools and materials for implementations with CSO partners, and district health management teams across the country. He/She will facilitate communication with and provide oversight to partners to develop and implement new strategies. Will review compliance with quality and branding standards for communication and community engagement approaches, methodologies and materials. This position will be based in Gaborone, Botswana and report to the Senior Technical Advisor, COVID-19 Program.

Technical Officers (Level I – III) provide a range of technical and administrative services at increasing levels of complexity to support project implementation and proposal development. Individuals within these positions are expected to demonstrate an increasing level of proficiency within the specific relevant technical area.

Accountabilities :

  • Provide behavior change, communications, mobilization and advocacy technical assistance to achieve EpiC programmatic goals ;
  • Identify barriers and issues affecting the uptake of vaccines by various target populations and identify ways to address them working hand in hand with various stakeholders  ;
  • Provide technical support in the development of SBCC strategies, tools/SOPs and materials for implementation  ;
  • Coordinate and support implementing partners for timely implementation and monitoring of Social and Behavior Change Communication interventions  ;
  • Develop and coordinate SBCC approaches with the ministry of health and wellness, district Health management teams and other stakeholders   ;
  • Social media platform management for risk communication and community engagement activities ;
  • Participate in the development and field test of community engagement SBCC approaches, materials and tools relying on innovative and responsive methodologies ;
  • Support development of a comprehensive Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) strategy and action plan ;
  • Build partnerships and serve as a liaison between relevant stakeholders and EpiC in SBCC programming ;
  • Assists in the conduct of formative research prior to, during the life of and upon the completion of the SBCC Projects, in collaboration with the M&E Unit and other relevant institutions ;
  • Establishes collaborations in the identification, documentation and sharing of best practice in order to strengthen SBCC programming through participation in scientific forums and technical networks ;
  • Represents EpiC in technical working groups/committees as required ;
  • Facilitate the development of targeted SBCC interventions for various target populations under the EpiC Botswana COVID-19 program ;
  • Produce periodic technical reports as required.

Applied Knowledge & Skills :

  • Proficiency with database management software and on-line search tools required ;
  • Development of scope of work and deliverables for partners, consultants, etc. ;
  • Has sensitivity to cultural diversity and understanding of the political, contextual, and ethical issues in assigned areas ;
  • Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner with clients and staff ;
  • Basic working knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures with providing technical support for technical research studies ;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills ;
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills ;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with using Microsoft Office Suite required ;
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data, identify errors, and prepare reports ;
  • Ability to solve problems and implement corrective action as needed ;
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English and Setswana ;
  • Prior experience and background in social behavior change methodology and practice ;
  • Prior experience in operational coordination and management of CSOs.

Supervision Given/Received :

Profil :

Education: ** Bachelor’s Degree or its International Equivalent in Civil Society, Communication and Social Marketing, Economic Development, Education, the Environment, Gender, Health, Nutrition, Research, Technology and Youth or Related Field.

Experience : **

  • Typically requires 3+ years of relevant experience providing management and technical assistance with social behavior change ;
  • Prior work experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO), government agency, or private company.

Typical Physical Demands :

  • Typical office environment ;
  • Ability to spend long hours looking at a computer screen and doing repetitive work on a keyboard ;
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time ;
  • Ability to lift 5 – 25 lbs.
