This job role is to primarily provide site and project engineering support for non-metallic (thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers and fiber-reinforced composites) materials selection across the upstream oil/gas and downstream petrochemical/refinery industry.
Extended work activities range from provision of sound technical recommendations for critical non-metallic materials manufacturing needs with vendors and solving materials manufacturing problems. Additional responsibilities include non-metallics materials specialist support for global projects and site program improvements aimed at unit reliability and maintenance optimization, materials specialist support and selection, providing appropriate applications of internal/external practices and standards and training/mentoring of early career engineers.
The Non-Metallics Materials Engineer role will be located in Bangalore Technology Centre (BTC), India, and will provide engineering support to upstream and downstream facilities globally. The candidate will work under the day-to-day direction of a Group Lead and Materials Supervisor.
Primary Skills Required / Job Functions :
- Familiar with failure modes and/or degradation mechanisms for polymers and composites; knowledgeable in applicable codes, industry standards, and test methods used for qualification and production of non-metallic/composite materials (tensile, Impact, hardness, creep, stress-relaxation and chemical compatibility) ;
- Understands structure-property-processing relationship and performance of non-metallic/composite materials in various oil and gas applications ;
- Familiar with common polymer characterization/analytical techniques such as DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry), TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis), DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis), FTIR (Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy ) and/or computational modeling ;
- Knowledgeable in polymer and composites fabrication and/or joining techniques e.g. extrusion, injection, rotomolding, butt fusion, etc. ;
- Understands life-cycle cost analysis for polymers and composites; also experienced with available inspection and NDE (Non Destructive Examination) methods commonly used e.g. UT, RT, PMI, spectroscopy as part of integrity management ;
- Monitors contractor, fabricator and supplier performance to identify potential problems in polymer or composite materials implementation (e.g. inspection/testing plans, engineering specialist support and surveillance) ;
- Prepares sections of materials design basis or critical specifications based on company global practices and project specifications; participates in the review of related technical queries and deviation requests ;
- Leads polymeric or composite manufacturing facilities audits, kick-off meetings and pre-production meetings with materials manufacturers; participates as company representative in troubleshooting manufacturing challenges with significant project cost/schedule implications ;
- Supports industry activities and joint industry projects (JIPs) ;
- Coordinates and communicate between various global centers and business affiliates for with respect to knowledge transfer, shared learnings, skills management and maintaining business relationships ;
- Technical mentoring and training for early career materials/integrity engineers ;
- Ability to learn and adapt to an agile and flexible working environment, continuously stay abreast of latest developments in industry standards/practices.
Job Requirements and Qualifications :
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree from a recognized university in Materials Engineering or related disciplines with GPA 7.0 or above ;
- 7-10 years of professional experience in upstream oil & gas production, Liquefied Natural Gas, Refining, and/or Petrochemical industries ;
- Working knowledge of non-metallic material classes within each type of material and their chemical resistance, mechanical and other properties ;
- Working knowledge for the selection of polymer or composite materials for routine applications ;
- Understanding on major non-metallic materials including fiber reinforced composites, their application and compatibility in challenging service conditions ;
- Familiar with test methods used for qualification and production testing of non-metallic materials ;
- Familiar with the standard documentation used by vendors to communicate manufacturing plans and qualification results ;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and strong verbal/written communication skills in English.
