KORDOFAN GIRAFFE PROJECT 

Kordofan Giraffe Project Unpaid Internship – Zakouma National Park

Dates required:

Immediate start until 26th April 2019.

OR start in November for second field season.

Future field seasons;

November – May 2019, 2020, 2021.

There will be three more field seasons, and the position is open to a new student each year; after one field season you should have learned enough skills to move onto a paid job.

The Kordofan Giraffe Project is seeking a multi-lingual assistant to help in the collection and organisation of the giraffe data, as well as to produce educational literature to deliver to local persons of all ages. 

You will be taught about giraffe ecology as well as general African wildlife, and environmental and ecological theory. 

 

What the role involves: 

  • Using binoculars to identify giraffe sex, scars, and vegetation. 
  • Writing survey notes onto survey sheet as directed by the lead researcher.
  • Typing all survey notes into excel spreadsheet each day.
  • Downloading photographs and organising into group folders.
  • Checking database for giraffe ID’s.
  • Helping to organise the equipment each day for the next day’s survey.
  • Creating educational materials for all ages in English, French and Arabic.
  • Writing short blog posts of each fortnight on the project.
  • Any other tasks related to the project the lead researcher requires. 

 

An average Day on the project: 

6:30 – 11/12:30: Vehicle survey routes – driving through the park, GPS locating and photographing giraffe, identifying what they are eating and taking notes. 

On return 1 hour’s lunch break. 

12/13:30 – 16:30: Office work – typing up the written data collected into an excel spreadsheet, as well as downloading all photos from the morning, organising into encountered groups and then into individuals. Creating individual giraffe ID’s and checking against the database to see if we recognise the individual. 

Some days will be spent entirely in the office, and you will also be responsible for creating educational material for all ages in English, French and Arabic under the guidance of the lead researcher. 

 

Suitable Persons who should apply: 

  • Higher education background.
  • Background in science or wildlife studies.
  • A passion for wildlife and wanting to learn from the experience.
  • Fully literate in English, French and Arabic, and able to speak all three.
  • Fully computer trained to use Word and Excel.
  • Prepared to live in basic conditions at Zakouma NP for up to 6 months (There is little or no phone and internet signal).
  • People skills, trustworthy and hard working.

Position would suit a student hoping to use field work as part of a thesis in masters or similar qualification.

Accommodation and food will be provided.

An interview with language and computer test and at least 2 references will be required.
