Nature of the Position :
The Driver will be supervised directly by the Administrative Assistant. S/he will drive and ensure periodic maintenance of official UNHCR assigned vehicles, in line with the technical guidance and specifications established by the Organisation. The incumbent should have a driving license categories B, C, D, E. Moreover, good basic vehicle mechanical skills and knowledge of driving rules and regulations are mandatory. Good knowledge of road and traffic security and safety regulations as well as a completion of Basic and advance field security training are desirable. In this sense, the incumbent should have a full command on local languages. S/he should maintain a good relationship with the local population in order to moderate any misunderstanding with the host population. Previous involvement with emergency situations including the capacity to undertake activities under pressure and in a stressful working environment is desirable. Knowledge of local languages is strongly required. Also, the candidate should be client service oriented in daily contacts with staff and demonstrate a good inter-personal skills.
Living and Working Conditions :
Accommodations can be found in Abeche and UNHCR Staff can choose their residence while respecting Residential Security Measures.
The climate is hot and semi-arid, with a rainy season from June to September. Electricity supply can be unstable and international staff members are provided generators by the office.
Water supplies work in most areas but a personal food and drinkable water supply is required. Most relevant supplies can be found on local markets though choice can be limited compared to other hubs and prices are high as most goods are imported.
Banking facilities are available through local banks, such as Ecobank and BCC and ATMs are also operational.
All communications within the office and with external partners such as Government and humanitarian agencies are conducted in French. Fluent French (both written and spoken) is essential for this position. However, working knowledge of English, especially written, is also required as more and more reports, internal as well as external, are requested in English. A French military base is located adjacent to Abeche airport. There are regular flights from N’djamena to Abeche which makes it accessible for staff taking R&R.
