Overview :
Botswana faces a significant unemployment problem that affects young people especially hard. Youth unemployment rates are several times higher than the rates among adults and particularly high in cities and among females. Given the transition that young people go through from childhood to adulthood and the socio-economic challenges that come with that development process, it does not come as a surprise that the Botswana Government Policy on youth attaches much importance to the notion of using entrepreneurial activity to foster creativity, innovation and self-employment amongst Botswana youth. Central to this policy is the introduction of financial assistance schemes such as Youth Development Fund (YDF), Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA)’s Young Farmers’ Fund, Governments’ Women’s Grants etc. It has therefore become imperative to gain an understanding on the factors that drive youth entrepreneurship in different settings in Botswana to guide actions for formulating effective, evidence-based policies that can help address the youth development challenge.
It is against this background that the Ministry of Youth, Sport & Culture Development (MYSC) with the support on UNDP Botswana requires services of a consultant to undertake a study to examine the needs, opportunities and constraints of youth entrepreneurship in Botswana with the view to develop knowledge base and systems for guiding development of effective youth empowerment programmes and policies. The study will be done under the auspices of an agreement between UNDP and MYSC to implement project titled the “Support to the Fulfilment of Human Rights, Access to Justice and Empowerment of Women and Youth Project” (2018 – 2021) (“the Project”).
